London's Portobello Road Market Portobello Road, Golborne Road, London, W10 Open: General: Mon-Wed, Fri, Sat 8am-6.30pm, Thur 8am-1pm; Antiques: Sat 5.30am-4.30pm London’s Portobello Road Market is one of London’s best known markets, partly as a result of featuring in a certain Notting Hill-featured film, but mostly as the market’s featured wares are so dynamic, as you move from the antiques of the Notting Hill end, the stalls change to display food such as fruit, vegetables, cheeses, crepes, meats, cakes and breads; on then to clothes, both second-hand, new and designer, when finally you find yourself looking at antique military memorabilia at Ladbroke Grove. Quite a journey. Mark Jason Gallery 1 Bell Street, Westminster, London, NW1 9 minutes walk from Paddington Railway Station This is a great gallery founded by Mark Jason, a previous employee of Christie's for more than 10 years and head of the Impressionist & Modern Department, which has been a consistent champion of young graduate artists. Thanks to a reputation for picking the best, regular visitors include most of the arts establishment keen to catch up on what's hot. Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum St Mary's Hospital Praed Street, Westminster, London, W2 3 minutes walk from Paddington Railway Station Visit this surprisingly humble laboratory in which Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Now restored to the musty, dusty cramped conditions of September 1928. Lisson Gallery 52-54 Bell Street, Westminster, London, NW1 Lisson Gallery has been at the forefront of developments in contemporary art since 1967 and has maintained its position as an independent force in the international art world over three decades. Little Venice Maida Vale, Westminster, London, W2 11 minutes walk from Paddington Railway Station Little Venice is interspersed with waterways. While you'll never mistake it for the Italian city, it does have some superb restuarants, bars and cafes lending the whole area a cosmopolitan, laid back vibe. |
